Drama/Elementary Music

Aquinas Academy students in kindergarten through eighth grade have an opportunity to experience a taste of the performing arts through the school's drama program. A full schedule of drama/musical performances are held throughout the year.

Classes in music and drama are given twice during each six-day cycle for kindergarten through fourth grades. Our fifth graders have a drama class during that time. Drama is also offered to the three-and-four- year old preschool program when available.

Each year, students in kindergarten through second grades participate in a Grandbuddies Gathering. This is a special morning set aside when grandparents and other family members and friends are invited to the school for breakfast, a prayer service and short musical performance in the school gymnasium. Grandbuddies Day is held in November for second grade and in March for kindergarten through first grade. Grandbuddies are invited to visit the Scholastic Book Fair held in the school library.

Other Aquinas productions include a Christmas play starring third and fourth grades, and a class play performed by fifth grade at the end of the school year.

The highlight of the year is the production of the school musical, which is performed by the students in sixth, seventh and eighth grades. Students audition for this full-staging musical/play and are involved in the production of the sets along with stage crew duties.

Due to the productions complexity, the play is rehearsed after school and presented in an auditorium at an offsite location. For the past two years, Aquinas Academy has performed at the Greensburg Garden and Civic Center. In years prior, performances were held at the Science Hall Theatre at Westmoreland County Community College in Youngwood.

Previous performances have included:  The Pirates of Penzance, The King and I, Into the Woods, and Fiddler on the Roof among others.
